PUBLIC ART SPECTACLE / ICON (2018)
An extraordinary spectacle about an ordinary person.
A lifestyle expo meets The Truman Show meets performance art.
For the 2018 Melbourne Fringe Festival Field Theory conceived of a mega event that elevated an ordinary person into an icon. Hosting a public lottery, the collective selected a winner and then descended on their suburban house to take up residence.
Over a 48 hour period, five artists immersed themselves in the minutiae of Claire Davenport’s life, filming the encounter and sharing the outcome in a large-scale live and screen event at Federation Square, Melbourne. Packed with performances, showbags, souvenirs, snacks and strange games ICON celebrated an ordinary human – their habits, tastes and pets – on a grand, grand scale.
